Turf Suppliers for Northumberland

Yes, we supply and deliver fresh turf across south-east Northumberland, Morpeth and the Tyne Valley. The grass is grown in the county: a rye and fescue mix, cut to order and sold as turf rolls at £4.75 each. Delivery charges and minimums depend on how far out you are, and checkout shows yours before you pay.

Delivering across a big, rural county

Northumberland is the least densely populated county in England. Most people live in the south-east, in towns like Blyth, Cramlington, Ashington, Bedlington and Morpeth. Beyond them it's farmland, coast and hills: the coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and about a quarter of the county is national park.

Deliveries go out Monday to Friday. With an order in by 2pm (for a Monday, by 2pm on Sunday), the following working day is the earliest available, but for remote addresses it pays to order well ahead, especially in spring. Rolls go to the nearest safe, accessible point a vehicle can reach and aren't carried to the back of the property. Read more about our delivery. Collection from our yard is free. There's more about turf in three areas: Morpeth, Cramlington and Hexham.

Grown here, cut to order

Because the turf is grown in Northumberland and only cut once you've ordered, the rolls are fresh when they reach you, not stockpiled. The rye in the mix makes it hard-wearing; the fescue keeps the grass fine and dense. Lay it on the day it comes, soak it, and don't let it dry out for the first two weeks or so.

Coast, hills and new estates

Gardens differ a lot across the county, and so does the preparation:

  • Coastal gardens: sea wind can dry out new turf. Water the edges and corners more often while it roots.
  • Higher, colder ground: turf is still cut in most winter weeks, as long as the ground isn't frozen, but upland gardens tend to freeze sooner and stay frozen longer. Only lay on soil that is neither frozen nor waterlogged.
  • New estates in the south-east towns: builders often leave compacted subsoil and debris. Break it up and add topsoil before laying.

Our guide on laying turf in winter covers cold-weather jobs, and the how much turf calculator works out quantities.

Big orders and trade

We supply landscapers and commercial firms as well as homeowners. Big orders check out like any other: add all the rolls you need to your basket.

Topsoil

Screened topsoil can be delivered anywhere we take turf in Northumberland, in one-tonne bulk bags or as a loose load. You can't collect it, and it usually comes on a separate trip from your turf. Please order it as far in advance as you can.

Questions

Is your turf really grown in Northumberland?

Yes. The rye and fescue mix is grown in the county and only cut once an order comes in.

Do you deliver to the north of the county, such as Amble, Alnwick or Berwick?

Our usual delivery area covers south-east Northumberland, Morpeth and the Tyne Valley. Amble is by arrangement: delivery there is £95, and we call you to confirm a day rather than you choosing one. For a large order to Amble, please ring 0191 500 9669 before you order. We don't deliver further north, to places such as Alnwick or Berwick. Collection from our yard is open to everyone.
