Turf Across Tyne and Wear

Yes, we deliver fresh turf right across Tyne and Wear, including North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Washington. Our own yard is in Tyne and Wear as well, on Brunswick Industrial Estate at the northern edge of Newcastle, where fresh turf rolls are cut to order and sold for £4.75 each. Place your order by 2pm the day before (for a Monday, by 2pm on Sunday) and delivery becomes available from the next working day.

Where we deliver in Tyne and Wear

North Tyneside

From Killingworth and Longbenton out to Wallsend, North Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. A lot of new housing is planned here: the Killingworth Moor masterplan allows for around 2,000 homes, and Murton Gap, near Rake Lane, is the borough's other strategic housing site.

South Tyneside

South Shields, Jarrow, Hebburn, the Boldons and Whitburn are across the river from our yard. Delivery works the same way there: Monday to Friday, with the usual 20-roll minimum, which can vary by location. Checkout confirms the price.

Washington

Washington was designated a new town in 1964 and is divided into residential villages, among them Albany, Barmston, Biddick, Concord, Fatfield, Oxclose and Rickleton. It's part of the City of Sunderland, with the A1(M) along its western edge.

For Sunderland and Gateshead, see turf in Sunderland and turf in Gateshead.

Front doors, back yards and kerbside drops

Tyneside flats are common in the older parts of North and South Tyneside: each terrace house is split into an upstairs and a downstairs flat, with separate front doors and small yards behind. Homes like these often have no drive, so turf is left at the kerb or another safe, accessible spot at the front, not carried through to your yard. Tell us at checkout if parking is tight. Small yards may need only a few rolls, and collection from our yard is free, from one roll. Read more about our drop-offs, and our turf calculator works out how many rolls you need.

Clay, coast and new-build ground

Much of Tyne and Wear lies on glacial till, the mix of clay, sand and stones left behind by the last ice age, which often makes for heavy ground. Don't lay turf onto bare clay. Loosen it, work in topsoil and level it first; the clay soil guide explains how.

On the coast at Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, South Shields and Whitburn, wind is the main enemy of new turf, because it dries the edges before the roots get going. On new estates in North Tyneside, expect compacted subsoil under a thin layer of soil.

Topsoil suppliers for Tyne and Wear

We deliver screened topsoil across most of Tyne and Wear: tipped loose, or in bulk bags of a tonne each. It can't be collected, and it travels separately from the turf, so have the soil spread and levelled before the rolls arrive. Please order it as far in advance as you can.

Questions

Do you deliver south of the river, to South Shields and Jarrow?

South Tyneside is in our delivery area for most addresses, Monday to Friday. Enter your postcode at checkout to confirm, and it shows the price and the minimum for your address.

Our new-build garden in North Tyneside is rock hard. What should we do before turfing?

Break up the compacted ground, clear out rubble and stones, then add topsoil and rake it level before the turf goes down.

Is it cheaper to collect?

Collection is free from one roll, so for a small job it saves the delivery charge. You can collect on weekdays, or on a Saturday between 9am and 12pm from April to September.
