Turf Delivery in Gateshead

Yes, we deliver fresh turf across Gateshead, from Bensham and Low Fell out to Whickham, Ryton and Birtley. Order turf rolls online at £4.75 a roll. Ours is Northumberland-grown rye and fescue, cut fresh for each order, and we deliver screened topsoil across the borough as well.

Up the hill from the Tyne

Gateshead climbs steeply from the river. The land rises around 70 metres from the quays to the town centre and carries on up to about 160 metres at Sheriff Hill, while the Team Valley, on the western edge, is flat. Our yard is north of Newcastle, so Gateshead orders cross the river and head up those slopes.

  • Deliveries run Monday to Friday, and checkout shows the exact price.
  • A 20-roll minimum applies, which can depend on your location.
  • Orders placed by 2pm the day before (for a Monday, by 2pm on Sunday) make delivery available from the next working day. Spring gets busy, so order well ahead.
  • Turf is left at the nearest safe, reachable spot, such as a drive or the kerbside, not carried through to the garden.

If your drive is steep, tell us when you order so the rolls can go down on level ground. Read more about how our delivery works.

Tyneside flats and small yards

Bensham and Saltwell have many pre-1919 terraces, a lot of them Tyneside flats: an upper and a lower flat in each two-storey terrace, each with its own front door. The yards behind are small, sometimes shared, and back onto lanes. A yard like that might take only a handful of rolls, so rather than meet a 20-roll delivery minimum, use click and collect. Collection is free, from one roll. Measure it first: a 3m by 3m yard is 9m², and 10 rolls covers it with some to spare. For bigger or odd-shaped gardens, the turf quantity calculator does the maths.

Drier than you might think

Gateshead sits in the rain shadow of the North Pennines, which makes it one of the drier parts of the UK. Don't rely on the weather to water a new lawn. Soak the turf as soon as it's down, then keep it moist for the first couple of weeks; rooting usually takes between two and four weeks, depending on the weather. Our guide to watering new turf sets out how much and how often.

Sloping garden? Lay the rolls across the slope rather than down it, stagger the joints like brickwork, and peg the turf on steeper banks. There's more in how to lay turf on a slope.

Topsoil delivery in Gateshead

Turf needs decent soil underneath to root into. If yours is thin, stony or uneven, we deliver screened topsoil across Gateshead, bagged (a tonne per bulk bag) or loose. A bulk bag suits a tight front with a drive; a loose load needs space where it can be tipped. Topsoil is delivery only, and it usually comes separately from the turf, so get the soil spread and levelled first. Please order it as far in advance as you can.

Questions

Do you deliver to Whickham, Ryton and Birtley as well as central Gateshead?

Yes, all three. Delivery needs a 20-roll minimum that can depend on location, and checkout shows your price.

Can topsoil come on the same delivery as the turf?

Usually not. Topsoil comes on its own delivery, so order it first, spread and level it, then order turf for the day you're ready to lay.

Is my garden too steep for turf?

Turf suits most garden slopes if it's laid across the slope and kept watered while it roots. On very steep banks, peg each roll so it can't slip.

Is it worth laying turf in a dry summer?

You can lay turf in summer, but in a dry spot like Gateshead plan to water daily in warm weather until it has rooted.
