Turf Delivered to Sunderland

Yes, we deliver fresh turf to Sunderland, from Fulwell and Roker in the north down to Ryhope and Doxford Park. Our turf rolls cost £4.75 apiece and each covers about 1m². The grass is rye and fescue, grown in Northumberland and cut fresh for every order. Order by 2pm the day before (for a Monday, by 2pm on Sunday) and delivery is available from the next working day.

Getting turf to a Sunderland address

Our yard is on Brunswick Industrial Estate, just north of Newcastle, close to where the A1 meets the A19. From there the A19 runs south through the Tyne Tunnel and past the west side of Sunderland.

  • When: Monday to Friday.
  • Cost: by postcode. You see the exact charge at checkout.
  • Minimum: 20 rolls, though this can depend on the address.
  • Where it goes: the closest safe spot we can reach, usually your drive or the kerb, not through to the back garden.

Plenty of older Sunderland streets have no drives, only on-street parking. If that's you, add a note about where the rolls can sit and have a barrow ready. Read about our delivery to see what kerbside means in practice. In spring, order early.

Back lanes are fine within reason. If you’re not sure our vehicle can get down yours, call us on 0191 500 9669 before your delivery day. Otherwise we’ll leave the turf at the nearest point the vehicle can safely reach.

Cottage gardens and small front plots

Sunderland has a house type all of its own: the Sunderland cottage, a single-storey terrace built mainly between 1860 and 1910, first for shipyard workers. Streets of them survive in Millfield, Pallion, Hendon, Fulwell, High Barnes and Ryhope. Each has a back yard and many have a front garden; on Rosslyn Street in Millfield the front gardens are unusually long.

A plot this size may need fewer rolls than the delivery minimum. Measure it: a 4m by 3m front garden is 12m², which is 12 rolls, or 13 with 5% extra for offcuts. Our turf calculator handles curves and odd shapes. Under 20 rolls, collect from our yard instead. Collection is free, from a single roll.

Seafront gardens at Roker, Seaburn and Hendon

The built-up city reaches the sea at Seaburn and Roker in the north and at Hendon and Ryhope in the south. Gardens near the seafront catch more wind, which pulls moisture out of new turf even on a cool, grey day. Butt the rolls tightly so the edges can't curl, soak the lawn after laying, then check the corners and joins daily for the first fortnight. The watering guide has a simple routine.

New homes near Doxford Park

The Chapelgarth masterplan near Doxford Park, part of the South Sunderland Growth Area, plans for around 750 homes. New-build gardens often hide compacted subsoil and builders' rubble under a thin skin of soil, so dig a couple of test holes before ordering. Hard, stony ground needs breaking up and topping with soil first. This new-build lawn example shows the stages.

Topsoil to go under it

We bring screened topsoil to Sunderland too, either loose or in 1-tonne bulk bags. It isn't available to collect, and it usually comes on a separate delivery from the turf, so book the soil first and the turf for when the ground is ready. Please order it as far in advance as you can.

Questions

My front garden only needs about eight rolls. Can you deliver that few?

Delivery has a 20-roll minimum, and it can depend on the address. For a small order, collect from our yard instead: collection is free from one roll, Monday to Friday, and on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm between April and September.

Will new turf cope with the wind near the coast at Seaburn?

The main risk near the sea is wind drying the turf out before it roots, which usually takes two to four weeks depending on the weather. Keep the edges and corners well watered for that whole period.

Do you deliver on Saturdays?

Deliveries run Monday to Friday. Saturday collection from our yard is available from 9am to 12pm, April to September.
