Turf for new-build gardens
Moved into a new build with bare soil, or a lawn the builder laid that hasn't taken? Here's how to get a proper lawn down, with turf delivered or collected from our yard, and topsoil delivered.
Check the ground first
New-build gardens are often left with compacted subsoil, a thin layer of topsoil and leftover building rubble just below the surface. Turf laid straight onto that can struggle to root.
- Dig a test hole. If you hit hard clay or rubble within a spade's depth, the ground needs work first.
- Clear rubble and stones from the top layer.
- Add topsoil where it's thin. As a general guide, 1 tonne is enough for laying around 25m² of turf, and more on poor ground. Order topsoil.
- Level and firm the ground, then lay the turf the day it arrives.
Turf and topsoil from one yard
We sell fresh Northumberland turf, cut to order, and screened topsoil in bulk bags or tipped loose, from our yard north of Newcastle. Topsoil is delivery only and usually comes separately from your turf. Turf can also be collected from our yard, from just one roll, and collection is free.
- £4.75: a roll, about 1m²
- From 1 roll: free collection from our yard
- From £29: delivery, 20 rolls or more
- 2pm: order by, Mon to Fri, for the next working day

New-build questions
The builder laid turf and it's dying. Can I lay over it?
It's better to lift it first. Dead or patchy builder's turf often sits on poor ground, so lift it, fix the soil underneath, then lay fresh turf.
How much topsoil do I need?
As a general guide, 1 tonne is enough for laying around 25m² of turf, anywhere between 20 and 35m² depending on what the garden needs. If you're improving poor ground, use more. A 5m x 4m lawn (20m²) needs about 1 tonne, and 50m² about 2 tonnes.
Can you deliver to a new-build estate?
Yes. We deliver Monday to Friday across Newcastle and the North East, to the nearest safe, accessible point at your property.
Do you turf whole plots or several houses?
Yes. For supply only, add all the rolls you need to your basket and check out as normal. See turf for developers.
