A shed is only as reliable as the ground beneath it. This shed base materials guide will help you choose a base that keeps your shed level, supports its weight and prevents moisture rising into the floor. Get this stage right and your new garden storage, workshop or summerhouse will be far easier to install and maintain.

The best material depends on the size and use of the shed, the condition of your garden and how permanent you want the structure to be. A small tool shed on firm, well-drained ground has different requirements from a large workshop storing machinery or logs.

What a good shed base needs to do

A proper base has three jobs. It needs to create a level surface, spread the shed's load evenly and allow water to drain away rather than collect under the floor. If any one of these is missed, you can end up with doors that stick, warped cladding, a damp floor or an unstable structure.

The base should normally be slightly larger than the footprint of the shed. This gives the building full support at the edges and leaves a practical margin while you are fitting it. Avoid positioning a shed directly on soil or grass. Ground that looks flat in summer can soften, shift and hold water after a North East winter.

Before choosing materials, check the proposed area for slopes, overhanging trees, drainage routes and access for bringing materials in. Keep clear of low points where rain naturally settles. Gravel base

A gravel base is a sensible choice for many sheds, particularly where drainage is the main concern. It is quick to lay, does not require a long curing time and lets water pass through rather than sit against the underside of the shed.

For a lasting result, excavate the area, lay a geotextile membrane to separate the ground from the aggregate, then add and compact a suitable sub-base. Finish with a level layer of gravel. The shed itself should sit on treated timber bearers, a suitable grid system or another stable frame, rather than directly in loose stone.

Gravel is particularly useful for small and medium timber sheds, provided the ground is prepared properly. It is not the best option where the shed will carry very heavy equipment, or where you need a completely solid internal floor for wheeled tools. In those cases, paving or concrete is usually a better fit.

Concrete slab

Concrete gives the strongest, most permanent shed base. It is a good option for larger buildings, workshops, garden offices and sheds holding heavier items such as ride-on mowers, workbenches or machinery. Once laid correctly, it offers a flat, hard-wearing platform that will not move under normal use.

The work is more involved. You will need to excavate, install a compacted sub-base, build formwork and pour the slab to the required depth. A concrete base must be level, but it should not have a fall that directs water underneath the shed. Let it cure fully before installing the building.

Concrete can cost more in materials and labour than other choices, and it is not easily changed if you later move the shed. It also needs care around drainage. If rainwater runs towards the slab, plan a gravel strip or drainage channel around the outside so water does not splash back onto timber walls.

Paving slabs

Paving slabs provide a firm, tidy base without committing to a full concrete pour. They work well for standard garden sheds and are easier to repair or lift in the future if needed. They also give a stable surface for bearers or a timber floor frame.

The key is the preparation below the slabs. Lay them on a properly compacted sub-base with a level bedding layer, checking each slab as you go. Do not place slabs straight onto turf or loose soil. They may look fine at first, but settlement will quickly create low points and uneven support.

For heavier sheds, use substantial slabs and make sure the joints are fully supported. Small paving flags can crack if they bridge soft areas underneath. Slabs are a practical middle ground for homeowners who want a solid result without the permanence of concrete.

Timber frame base

A timber base is useful when the site is sloping, access is limited or you want to keep the shed raised above damp ground. It is normally built from pressure-treated structural timber and supported on ground screws, concrete pads, deck blocks or a prepared gravel bed.

This option can be quicker than laying a slab and is often easier to level on awkward sites. Raising the shed improves airflow beneath the floor, which helps reduce trapped moisture. However, every support point needs to be sound and level. A frame that is only supported at the corners can flex over time.

Use timber designed for external structural use and make sure it is not sitting in standing water. For larger sheds, closer joist spacing and additional supports are essential. If you are unsure about load requirements, a concrete or paved base is the more straightforward route.

How to choose the right base for your shed

Start with the weight of the shed and what will be stored inside. A light tool store may be perfectly suited to gravel and bearers. A large timber workshop with shelving, equipment and regular footfall needs more rigid support. Next, consider your garden's drainage. Gravel is excellent where water needs somewhere to go, while concrete and slabs need a well-planned perimeter to avoid puddles. Clay-heavy ground can become saturated for long periods, making a raised timber frame or a well-drained aggregate base especially useful.

Think about access as well. A concrete delivery may not suit a narrow rear garden, while aggregate, slabs and timber can usually be brought through in manageable loads. Whatever material you choose, preparation makes the difference between a base that lasts and one that causes trouble within a season. Mark out the area, allowing a little extra space around the shed. Remove turf, roots and soft topsoil until you reach firmer ground.

Build up the area in compacted layers rather than tipping in all the material at once. A plate compactor gives the best result for larger bases, although a hand tamper can work on a small shed base with patience. Check levels in more than one direction using a long straight edge and spirit level.

Do not rely on the shed floor to hide an uneven base. A building can be square, but still twist when placed on high or low spots. That strain shows up later in poorly aligned doors, cracked panels and gaps where rain can get in.

The usual problems are avoidable. Building straight onto grass, using un-compacted fill, making the base too small and ignoring drainage all create unnecessary risk. Another common mistake is using loose blocks under only a few points of the shed. These can sink independently and leave the floor unsupported.

Avoid using a base that is higher than the surrounding ground without considering where surface water will go. A raised edge can act like a dam in heavy rain. Leave room for drainage around the structure and keep soil, bark and planting away from timber cladding.

If the base is for a shed with a timber floor, bearers should run in the direction recommended by the manufacturer and be supported evenly along their length. A little extra time spent checking levels before the shed arrives will save far more time than trying to correct it afterwards.

A well-built shed base is not the most visible part of a garden project, but it is the part that protects everything above it.
